The Sidemount Diver trains with sidemount equipment configuration. First, the student dives with tanks attached on each side, with one tank clipped on and one tank positioned in front. Additionally, the diver swims with both tanks in front while diving. Moreover, students practice removing and replacing cylinders underwater. Finally, this training ensures divers are confident with sidemount techniques.
Part 1 – Theory and Confined Water Training
Students complete a minimum of 8 hours of theory. Instructors explain the different sidemount equipment configurations and recommend which setups to use for sidemount diving.First, students attend orientation and knowledge development sessions about Sidemount diving. This includes learning about equipment configurations, buoyancy control, gas management, and dive planning. Then, students practice Sidemount diving in confined water, such as a swimming pool or shallow training site. During this time, they focus on assembling their equipment, controlling buoyancy, and switching tanks efficiently.
Part II: Open Water Training
Next, students enhance their understanding of Sidemount diving techniques in preparation for real open water conditions.
Afterwards, they complete two open water dives (dives 2 and 3) to apply all the skills learned in confined water. Meanwhile, instructors provide guidance to ensure proper technique and safety.
Part III - Skills Evaluation and Certification
Finally, instructors evaluate students’ Sidemount diving skills through additional open water dives, ensuring they can apply their skills safely and effectively.
Moreover, students record their dives and receive certification as PADI Sidemount Divers upon successful completion of all requirements.
