The Cavern Diver Training course primarily helps students develop the minimum skills and knowledge required to dive safely in the overhead environment. Moreover, it ensures that students follow the specified standards set forth by TDI. In addition, the course teaches the dangers and risks involved while diving in an overhead environment. Furthermore, the course develops and reinforces minimum skills, task management, problem-solving abilities, knowledge, and the capability to safely cavern dive. Specifically, students practice problem-solving in emergency procedures, buoyancy control, propulsion techniques, and proper body positioning. Consequently, TDI believes this course offers a significant safety benefit for all active divers, even if they never have the opportunity to cavern dive again after completing the course.

NOTE: Cavern diving programs require a great deal of instructor attention and evaluation. Instructors conducting this course are at the apex of instructor ability and experience.
LIMITATIONS : This training follows the scope of program. The program prepares students to enter a cavern within the daylight zone and restricts the maximum depth to 30 msw (100 fsw). Students must complete at least 160 minutes of bottom time and 200 minutes of total run time. For all dives conducted in this program, divers consider 1.45 Bar / ata PO2 as the bottom mix limit, while limiting maximum oxygen exposure for at-rest or light work activities to 1.6 Bar / ata PO2. All dive profiles stay within the NSR limits. Students must swim side by side at all times, and they must follow the primary line for all dives.
Part I – Theory
First, students complete a minimum of 5–8 hours of theory, which covers general Cavern Diving information.
Additionally, the instructor sets the number of students per session based on their capacity.
Finally, students take a written test on cavern diving topics and must achieve at least 80% to pass.
Part II – Open Water Training
Students perform practical exercises under supervision and evaluation by the TDI instructor:
First, students conduct gas analysis and record data accurately.
Next, they practice dive planning skills.
Additionally, Cavern divers complete four or more cavern dives.
However, no more than two dives per day count toward certification.
Furthermore, students log a minimum of 160 minutes bottom time and 200 minutes total time during the course.
In order for a dive to count toward certification, students spend at least 30 minutes on the bottom.
Finally, the instructor maintains a 1:3 ratio for Cavern divers, adjusting it according to conditions and student abilities.
